Mountain shelters
The Andean Refuges are mountain shelters inspired by the European model, located at strategic points in the Cordillera Blanca to accommodate hikers and climbers. Their construction and management are the result of the volunteer efforts of Operation Mato Grosso and many young Peruvians from Andean oratories, who took part in the carpentry, masonry, and assembly work.
This project began in 1996, when Father Ugo launched the challenge of building the first refuge, Pisco, at an altitude of 4,200 meters, with the enthusiastic collaboration of older members of the Oratory community. Today, these mountain refuges are managed by young people from different parishes, promoting local development and supporting Andean communities. All income generated is dedicated to social projects.
